Brief Information
Surgery is a key component of cancer treatment. Surgery has become one of the most successful and powerful cancer care treatments, thanks to therapeutic options such as minimally invasive operations.
Types of Surgical procedures are as follows:
- Diagnosing a case of cancer (diagnostic surgery or biopsy)
- Surgical removal of a tumor or a section of a malignancy (curative or debulking surgery)
- Determine the location of the cancer, if it has spread, and whether it is interfering with the activities of other organs (staging surgery)
- Remove any tissue from body that may become cancerous (preventive surgery)
- Other methods of therapy, such as the installation of an infusion port, (supportive surgery)
- Restore the look or function of the body (reconstructive surgery)
- Alleviate symptoms (palliative surgery)
- Minimally Invasive Surgery - Laparoscopy: A surgical oncologist creates a few small incisions and introduce a laparoscope—a thin tube with a tiny camera connected to it—into one of them to record an internal picture, while surgical instruments are inserted into the other incisions to remove malignancies and surrounding tissue.
